Summer School

Consumer Education introduces students to such topics as establishing credit and using it wisely, investing, buying or leasing an automobile, establishing and maintaining savings and checking accounts, choosing an apartment, filing federal and state income tax forms, as well as smart shopping techniques. This class provides experience through class projects and is supplemented with guest speakers from the community.  Consumer Education will provide the skills necessary to allow students to make sound financial decisions intelligently as they transition to independent living.  Development of job seeking and job keeping skills such as dependability, cooperation, and initiative are important components of this course.  

CONSUMER EDUCATION  

Semester 1: June 2-5, 9-12, 16-18 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

If the Semester 1 class fills to capacity, this course may be offered in Semester 2.  

Prerequisites: Must be entering grade 10, 11, or 12

District 99 requires 4 years of English to graduate, including both a reading and writing course in senior year.

All courses below are designed to offer credit recovery for students who did not earn credit during the regular school year or would like to work to grade replace their credit from the previous year. Students cannot take English in order to advance credits. Speak to your counselor if you have any questions.

Note:  You may enroll in either summer school semester regardless of what school year semester grade you are replacing.  For example, if you would like to replace your English 2 semester 1 grade, you may enroll in English 2 summer school semester 1 or semester 2.  All classes will be held on the following dates & times:

District 99 requires a minimum of three years of math to graduate.

FOUNDATIONS OF MATH 1

A scientific calculator is required; the TI-30X model is strongly recommended.

Prerequisites: This course is open to incoming 9th graders and current D99 students

Note: You MUST enroll in the specific semester you want to earn credit for. For example, if you ONLY failed semester 1 of this course, you must enroll in semester 1. You cannot choose to attend semester 2 and replace your grade or earn credit, as the content is not the same.  If you are an incoming 9th grader looking to take Math1/Math1S next school year, you must enroll in both semesters.

MATH 1

Prerequisites: This course is being offered for credit recovery for those students that were enrolled during this past school year but did not earn credit, for grade replacement for those who passed but would like to improve their grade and deepen their knowledge, as well as for advancement purposes for incoming freshmen that have successfully completed either a) an Algebra I course or b) a grade 8 mathematics course based on the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics and get pre-approval from mathematics department chair prior to May 9, 2025.

NOTE: 2025 Summer School Drivers Education Course is full and applications are no longer being accepted.

The program consists of classroom instruction and "behind the wheel" driving with an instructor and runs fluidly through both semesters (details below).  The classroom phase will include basic information on Illinois traffic laws, the fundamentals of driving, decision-making skills, alcohol and driving, insurance, and basic car maintenance.  Actual on-street driving consists of driving in a dual-control car, enabling the student to experience actual driving conditions.

• The registration fee for in-district learners is $250 and $670 for out-of-district learners (addresses are verified by staff).
• Class dates:  June 2-5, 9-12, 16-18, 23-26, 30 & July 1-2, 7-10
• Class Times: 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
• Class Location: Downers Grove South High School

Note: Students will be given a schedule as we get closer and will not need to attend the entire 8AM-2PM sessions. However, all enrolled students are expected to be avalable during that entire time period for scheduling purposes. No exceptions.

Please read all of the following information before you register.

Student must be 15 years old by May 15, 2025

• Vacations, camps, etc are NOT allowed.  An absence may result in failure to meet State Driver Education guidelines for attendance and of the course. There are no exceptions.
• District 99 residents will be charged $250 to complete the course, and non-residents will be charged $670. All payments will be made online (see below).
• No refunds will be issued after May 1, 2025.

In order to take the class, your student must have their permit prior to the first day of class. Permits cannot be issued more than 30 days before class begins. Information packets, permit paperwork, and information on an orientation meeting will be sent on May 1. Parents should not move forward with attempting to obtain a permit prior to this date.

Technically, there is no bus service specifically for Driver Ed students. Regular buses serving summer school arrive prior to 8am start, and depart following the 2 p.m. end of day.  However, as noted above, your student may not be required to start right at 8 a.m. or stay until 2 p.m., based on their individual schedule that day.

Registration opens February 3, 2025 at 8:00 AM and is completely online. Please be aware that spots fill up quickly. While we will hold a waitlist, we do not guarantee that any additional spots beyond those initially accepted will be open.

 

In District 99, students are currently required to have two years of science to graduate.

BIOLOGY 300

US HISTORY

This course satisfies the graduation requirement in the U.S. History and Federal and State Constitutions.

Prerequisites: This course is only open to students who have previously attempted this course and did not pass and/or would like to consider grade replacing and deepening their knowledge.

District 99 is pleased to offer noncredit-bearing enrichment experiences that are designed to extend and expand thinking and learning and improving academic success. Consider enrolling one or more of these courses this summer. The costs include all required materials. 

AP CHEMISTRY PREP

• Targeted Grade Levels: 10-12
• Session: 6 weeks, from June 2 – July 10, 2025
• Times: Online with face-to-face meetings once a week for check in and laboratory activities
• In person sessions Mondays, 6/2, 6/9, 6/16, 6/23, 6/30, 7/7 – 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.
• Cost: $125 in district ($175 out of district)
• Prerequisite: Enrollment in AP Chemistry for 2025-2026

Note:  This course is only open to students who attend DGN or DGS.  

Taking AP Chemistry next year?  Pre-AP Chemistry is an enrichment course designed to help prepare students for the rigor of AP Chemistry.  This 6-week course will reinforce student’s knowledge of 6 key topics:  Nomenclature, Measurement and the Mole, Stoichiometry, Gases, Solutions, and Thermochemistry.  While the majority of the course is taught online, a weekly in-person meeting will be strongly recommended.  This in-person meeting is crucial for building the laboratory skills that are critical to a student’s success in AP Chemistry.  Upon completion of the course, students will be exempt from the mandatory summer assignment that accompanies enrollment in AP Chemistry. This 3-day course is built to help develop Mathematical and Literacy based skills to help students achieve greater academic goals.  The course will offer students the opportunity to answer the common question, “What do I do when I do not understand?” This interactive class will allow students to practice a variety of learning strategies applied to different content areas and a variety of types of text encountered in high school and college. Topics include: Cornell note taking; visualization strategies; strategies to focus and connect with podcasts, videos, lectures and other media; comprehension of challenging text; Costa's questioning; writing effective summaries; strategies to learn academic vocabulary; identifying author's purpose and claim; along with speaking and listening skills. All learning styles and all levels of high school students are welcome to work with our math and reading specialists.

If any session has low enrollment, the session may be cancelled and students will have the opportunity to switch to a different session.  

 

All students will need their Chromebooks, chargers, and school ID in summer school. Incoming 9th grade students and students outside D99 will be given Chromebook/ID on their first day of school (or we will reach out sooner if there is a sooner pickup date). They should also bring a pen/pencil and folder/notebook.

If they are in a math class and have a graphing calculator, they should bring that. 

NOTE: We do our best to keep all rooms cool, so your student should dress in layers and bring a sweatshirt in case it is needed.

All students will be given a 30 minute lunch break. Students can choose to bring their own sack lunch or get a cold lunch from the school Cafeteria for $5. Some a la carte options may be available as well for purchase, but we encourage kids to bring their own snacks if they are counting on a specific item. To purchase lunches, you may use cash or your cafeteria account just as you would in the typical school year.

Please note that students CANNOT order in their own lunches or accept deliveries. If students choose to order in food, it will sit at the front desk for the remainder of the school day.

Attendance is extremely important. In any course except Drivers Education, if a student misses more than 2 days of school per semester, regardless of the reason, they will need to be withdrawn from summer school and no refund will be issued. Official documentation will not excuse an absence like in regular school year. Each day of summer school is roughly equivalent to an entire week of regular school curriculum. Please plan vacations, sports, camps, etc. outside of the summer school program.

Every tardy (being late to class between 1 minute and 19 minutes) counts. If you receive 3 tardies, that is counted as an absence.

For Drivers Education, any absence may result in failure to meet State Driver Education guidelines for attendance and the course.

Students are only able to take ONE class per semester, which typically runs 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. for that class. We encourage students to talk to their counselors prior to registering to figure out what is best for their 4-year plan.

Students are able to retake a course, with counselor permission. The student's new grade will be recorded on the transcript and it will also be calculated into the student's GPA.

Your child will receive either a withdrawal grade or withdraw fail on their transcripts, based on when they are removed.

Remember, three absences in a semester is an automatic fail, regardless of reasons.

On May 30, you will receive an email with information about where to report. If you are not familiar with the building, once you enter a drop off point at the school, administrators and staff will be present to help you get to class. Consider getting dropped off a few minutes early on the first day in order to be sure you are not late!

No. Students do not have the choice to attend in-person or digitally. They must attend in-person all days of summer school, unless quarantined.

Bus Transportation will be available to only in district students that live at least 1.5 miles away.   

Bus route information will be available on our web site no later than end of day May 30 and will also be emailed out at that time.

Yes students can park at South in the Student Parking Lot on the west side of the building near the football field. 

They must be dropped off at the main entrance (entrance on Norfolk Street) or West Events entrance.

Students who ride bicycles should be careful to chain their bikes to the bike racks in front of the school.  IN THE EVENT OF THEFT, DISTRICT 99 IS NOT RESPONSIBLE.
