The Counseling and Student Support Services (CSSS) Department at North High School believes that all students can achieve and should be empowered to succeed to their individual, full potential. Our work is a partnership with parents, families and teachers. We believe that effective communication and collaboration is essential in promoting social, emotional and academic growth for every student. As student advocates, the CSSS staff works with students, families, teachers and staff to identify interventions and strategies to remove barriers to learning.

Each student at North High School is assigned to an alpha team, who will move with the student from grade to grade. Alpha team assignment is based on a student’s last name.  Each alpha team consists of two counselors, a dean and a school psychologist or social worker and the school nurse. The purpose of the team is to coordinate information and services in order to more fully serve students. Teams meet on a weekly basis to coordinate efforts to help all students.

Counselor: Counselors develop relationships with students and their families in order to provide students with ongoing academic counseling, assist with post-secondary planning and to offer personal support, as needed. Counselors are the first resource or the “go to individuals” for all students and families.

Dean of Students: Deans help to maintain a safe and orderly environment by promoting and enforcing school rules.   They monitor student discipline issues and attendance concerns.

School Psychologist and School Social Worker
:   School Psychologists and Social Workers identify and support students whose social/emotional needs affect their day-to-day academic learning.  They facilitate student support groups and provide referrals to families for outside counseling.  Psychologists and social workers also have responsibilities related to special education.

School Nurse: The School Nurse monitors and assist students with everyday health issues as well as those with more challenging physical needs. She administers medications and manages student immunization and health records.

Student Assistance Coordinator:  The Student Assistance Coordinator supports the development of student leadership, coordinates school-based prevention activities and events and provides education and intervention services in the area of substance use and social-emotional health.  The goals of the Student Assistance Program are to help prevent alcohol, tobacco, or other drug use and to promote healthy choices that support positive student development and encourage academic success.
