Illinois Governor Pat Quinn proclaimed October 15, 2013 as Downers Grove North High School Day, and he visited the school to deliver the official proclamation in person.

The governor learned that North High students had elected Anne Wagner, a special needs student who has  suffered from leukemia, as the 2013 homecoming queen. The governor praised the students for being inclusive, and for the school's commitment to promoting a positive and supportive environment for everyone.

In addition to the governor, Anne's mother Amy Wagner and fellow student Mary Doro, Anne's friend since kindergarten, spoke. Mary initiated the nomination of Anne and started a campaign using social media to inspire others to support her.

District 99 Board of Education members, Village of Woodridge officials and Village of Downers Grove officials attended the all-school assembly.
