District 99 Provides Holiday Support for Over 250 People in Need

Students and staff at both North High and South High School adopted 250 children and 25 senior citizens in need this season, collecting and delivering holiday gifts for them on December 8, 2011. The effort, called “The Giving Tree,” is an annual project spearheaded by each school’s service-based clubs, including North High’s Direct Action Club and South High’s Key Club.

Both schools work with the Humanitarian Service Project (HSP) in Carol Stream to provide the holiday presents to those living in poverty in our area. Students, families and staff at the schools have all donated generously to the project.

“We are happy to help fill this need in our community. We know that our efforts give our students lessons that will last a lifetime,” says South High Counselor Amy Klug. “From shopping and wrapping to loading the buses, students are really connected to the action of what it means to give.”

Students at both schools helped to quality-control the packages, and then load the buses headed to the HSP.

“I am happy that so many families can have a really nice Christmas that they will always remember,” says North High senior Katie Canning.

“Not receiving anything in return is the greatest gift, to me, because you know you’ve helped someone,” says South High senior Jacqueline Estrada.

In addition to Klug, North High Teachers Karen Brown and Lisa Manglesdorf and South High Sharon Kuthrell lead The Giving Tree.
